        Fixing a Sliding Glass Door:

I have been fighting with my  sliding door on the rear of my house for awhile now . I tried cleaning where it slides but that only helped a little.I tried putting soap on the rail just like your old sled rails. Did not help at all.
So I turned to the trusty Internet to help me find a solution.Apparently there are wheels on the bottom that only last about 3 to 5 years. My door is 8 years old so I guess I lucked out.
First thing to do is take the door out of casement. On the bottom of the door there will be a small hole on either end. (have someone help you and hold door, these doors are very heavy) stick a screwdriver in there and turn counterclockwise. This will raise the wheels up and lower the door. On my door ,I had to also slide the rail out because the door would not clear the top casement. Now the door will clear top casement, pull towards you and lay it on its side.

Now you can access the wheel Assembly's.On mine there is only one screw holding the wheels in . Unscrew it and pull the wheels off. Mine were completely broken .The wheels were broken right down the center.

There was no markings on the door ,so I didn't know the manufacturer which would of helped a lot. So off to Home Depot with part in hand. No luck There so off to Lowe's. They had something really close so I took a chance and it worked out fine.

I had to tap these in as they were a little wider than the original. I lined up the screw hole an screwed it in.I gave both wheels a nice shot of wd40 and I;m ready to install door into casing. Buy before you do that , clean all the gunk out of where door slides.
Put the door back in, turn screws clockwise to raise door up, now slide rail back in, adjust screws again and your finished. Door should move with one finger.
You just saved yourself about a $100 to $200 by doing it yourself.
Oh ,and one more thing, Make sure you tell the rest of the family you fixed it because if they pull as hard as they usually do, they will probably put the door right through the wall.

Ok ,Shed is all done except for gutters . I will put those on later, after I save some money up. You would be surprised at how much money it cost to build this shed.
A rough estimate would be around $4500 but I'm sure after I total all the receipts It will be more.

The good thing is, now i can actually use my garage again. And everything toxic or flammable can be moved out to shed.I have a brother and brother in-law that are both firefighters. They told me that when they go to a house fire , they always worry if people are storing gas or propane in the garage or cellar.A 25 pound bbq propane tank can blow a house to pieces as well as kill quite a few people.Very Dangerous!

I was surfing the internet today and I found this site,

www.dorm-room.net , funny site about dorm room life at college, That looks like a lot of Styrofoam cups, must have taken quite a long time to do that.

As you can see, I get get sidetracked easy, probably why shed is not finished yet.The vinyl is all up except for the rear soffit.I
would install it today but its is supposed to be like 95 degrees out today. I will post more pics sometime this week.

If  I come across anymore good sites while  I'm  (ahem) working, I will post Those also.

So its raining out again today, I went out to make sure the roof was not leaking, all is well with the roof but I see I have some water coming in under garage door.

The floor is made of osb (oriented strand board ) ,so it will eventually blow out from getting wet. I painted the threshhold with Kiltz Latex Primer, a Temporary fix until I can Figure out what I should do.

Any suggestions about how to solve this would be appreciated.

As you can see I started moving things into the shed. It's Just amazing the amount of stuff  I've accumulated over the years. Do I really need 12 caulking guns? Probably not. Notice the vinyl siding on the floor? I picked it up today at Home depot. I also bought all the corner posts, j channel,  starter strip and I found an open pack of roof  shingles,(the same color as i was using) so now I can finish roof.

The shingles and roof are installed. i was short about  3 shingles so i couldn't finish the ridge cap. That's a bummer because i will have to buy a whole pack of shingles at $24 per pack , just to finish it. I almost used some silver shingles that I have in my garage, but why start being a hack now?Better to do it right. I started putting in some old kitchen cabinets, I will take some pics when they are installed. And when i clean up inside

I went to Home depot and checked out their line of garage doors.Of course, I, like everyone else do not like to spend money unless I have to. So I went directly to the value section. The cheapest of the doors $244, were just that, cheap! They only have one thin panel( about an 1/8 inch thick) so I passed on this and went to the next more expensive model. $314. It is a door made by Clopay, this model has the same thin front panel , but also has insulation panels behind it. I like the look and feel of this model better.
The door came with an installation cd which helped a lot. It also gave me an excuse to get out of the heat and  go into the house with air conditioning evry now and aagin. The cd said the average installation time would be about 4 hours. That translates into 6 for me. All in all it was quite easy, a one man job,and it it looks and works great.  Now onto shingleing

We finished putting on the tyvek, also tar papered the roof. Windows and entry door also in, fascia and rake boards installed. Just have to go to store and pick up shingles for roof, or maybe i will just get garage door started first, to keep the rain out .I got the windows from my brother in-law, he had them just sitting in his garage for about twelve years. The entry door was from a remodel on an old house of mine. It's been sitting in storage for about 9 years.Typacal guys right? We will save anything that still has a usefull purpose in life.No were not hoarders! I have old kitchen cabinets from same re-model , I will be putting in shed. Alright, maybe we hoard a little.

  1. We are moving right along on the shed. Roof is on , and we have the Tyvek almost all on.The Tyvek is a lot more expensive than it used to be.But that is what happens when everyone knows it's a quality product.I really should have cleaned up work site before I took picture.Tommorrow we will be putting up the rest of the Tyvek, put tar paper on roof to get ready for shingles, and maybe i will put in the windows and entry door.            Stay Tuned

I can't believe it's been over two years since I posted last.Oh well, when your busy ,your busy. Anyway, here is the latest project, a 12x 20 shed. I really need extra storage space so I searched the web for some plans to build my shed. I found a set on "e-bay" for $15.00. They were ok but i modified the materials list.Instead of 2x4 floor joists , I used 2x8's . Also notice 9x7 garage door ,nice! No windows on back wall, thats because I will hang all my ladders on back of shed.I will post more pictures as I progress.

Like most homeowners, the longer you live in a house , the more stuff you seem to collect. I cant wait to complete this shed, it'll be nice to actually use my garage to park cars in again.
